“A last painting from Venice. I was so frustrated and disappointed after this painting, having started late in the afternoon and having chosen what had seemed a very quiet spot to paint. Neither turned out to be true, it got dark as soon as I started and I appeared to be like a flame to the (tourist)moths so that I spent an hour in the descending gloom with the constant clicking of cameras in my ear! It was halloween, so I finally packed up and set off to meet the be-costumed Louis. The moment I left the sky turned orange... I'm sure there is a moral there somewhere!”
